SHORT RIGA #BMV screening-slash-party
The festival and the curators of SHORT RIGA are experimenting with the form of a screenining this year. The the only screening of the Baltic Music Video Competition will be held at the Festival Club – the Splendid Palace downstairs screening hall turned restaurant and bar – Cafe Film Noir. Expect the creators of the videos, the musicians behind the music, members of the International jury and the whole Riga IFF family for this party of moving pictures and loud music! Capacity of Cafe Film Noir is limited – be sure to get your ticket and arrive early if you want to see all the videos and meet all the authors!

WTF = A MUSIC VIDEO SHORT FILM?
The selection of music short films is an experimental programme with a question mark in its title. The programme has been created by four curators, each specializing in a different area: Sonora Broka (programme curator, Riga IFF creative director), Anna Veilande-Kustikova (shorts and animation researcher, Short Riga curator), Agnese Logina (music video and film researcher, curator) and Inese Vēriņa-Lubiņa (audio-visual media artists, VJ and tutor). The programme’s goal is to react to a recent phenomenon, music video short film, a term used to describe many audio-visual works. The curators’ attention focused on the diversity of these works. Thus a question arose whether such a description has a place in the already overpopulated area of genres and formats, and if it indeed has then what wonders such a verbal compound has for us in its bag. The programme is a compilation of a variety of genric, age-specific and origin-related works that, in our view, can full-fledgedly be called music video short films and in themselves are an audio-visual experience. During the programme’s running the curators will provide the viewers with comment and encourage a dialog about the selected material as well as other similar short-format works.

Riga IFF EXPO 2016
The photographer Andrejs Strokins has come across an extensive photography archive that documents the Soviet Latvian film theatre Palladium. The architect Zigmārs Jauja goes in the steps of the photographer. Whether the photographer is the man in a jockey hat we can assume by an accidental self-portrait made while capturing posters outside the theatre.

Riga IFF OPENING EVENT
It has become a tradition of Riga IFF to open with a national premiere. This year it is of special significance due to the author of the film being one that has been a member of the festival team since the first year – Vitaly Mansky, president of Artdocfest and curator of the Artdocfest/Riga programme. Vitaly’s second Latvian production – the personal story of his relatives in Ukraine – Rodnye will have it’s premiere in Latvia after a most successful run in festivals that take place before this October – such as IDFA, KVIFF, OIFF and TIFF. And of course – the Opening Event includes not only the meeting of the festival team with it’s audience for the coming days of the festival, but also the team behind the film.

Carmen Horrendum
This is not a typical Streičs film full of humour and sentiment. Carmen Horrendum, or Carmen the Terrible, is a psychological drama. It tells a story of very young women in the time after the war when hunting down ‘enemies of the state’ was commonplace. The horrific war has crippled both their bodies as well as their souls; the hospital they are at is the ground where characters collide, rumours are spread, and relationships become ever more complicated. However, the authors insist that the woman remains a woman despite everything – a creature yearning for love, understanding, trust, and tenderness.

The panel will be joined by the authors whose films examine the armed conflict and the experience of the people whose country has chosen a way of development towards joining the European Union. This choice has cost a great deal to Ukraine, because the way opted by the Ukrainian nation has led to a conflict with Russia and having a part of their country annexed. Also, as the result of this choice the Ukrainian public has been itself divided into two camps whose boundaries often separate families.

In the context of the films “Austerlitz” (dir. Sergei Loznitsa) and “Credit for Murder” (dir. Vladi Antonevic), the debate will examine the ways nationalism manifests itself in Europe and Russia. Every vaccine has a limited period of effect. Although each vaccine is important to the body, it does not guarantee an eternal life. The vaccine received by the public after the apprehension of the impact of the Nazi regime on Germany begins to lose its efficiency. It begins to dissolve into our memory and consciousness.

This is most commonly the ‘end’ and ‘beginning’: actor and director/screenwriter. What does all the before, in between and after consist of? What is important for us to bring out in the open, to share with a public? How do we want to use that immense platform of attention that film is to say what we want? Do we as film/business creators have a moral, political, ethical, artistic responsibility for what we put out in the world? How is that vision translated through the screen: visually, technically, acting wise, style wise, work method wise? Munck works as a script consultant for both writers and directors and has been teaching actors at various educational workshops for the last 7 years. Currently Charlotte is developing her own TV series, a monologue for theatre and working with theatre group FELT, as well as preparing to perform fully improvised drama at Teater Grob this fall. Audience behavior in the oversupplied on-demand market of today, how film professionals can find audiences for their films making use of social networks and chances supplied by internet and social networks, how to be creative in marketing activities. Michael Gubbins is an experienced journalist, analyst and consultant, working in film, entertainment and media industries, with a particular expertise in on-demand and digital change. He chairs the Film Agency for Wales, and has worked as editor at Screen International and Music Week. His work in film related industries and hands-on experience of both traditional industry processes and digital innovation gives Gubbins a rare overview of the media value chain. Long is a writer, teacher, script editor and story consultant. He has worked as a consultant for the UK Film Council’s Premiere and New Cinema Funds, the First Film Foundation, the Script Factory and many other bodies and producers, and is currently writing a supernatural feature to be shot on location in Italy. Ian heads Euroscript’s Feedback and Consultancy services and teaches Genre workshops in Horror, Science Fiction and Thrillers with a special side order of Creating Fear in Cinema, as well as a course in Script Reading and Assessment.
